The Rhayader Male Voice Choir

During the last few weeks the Rhayader and District Male Voice Choir have been busy rehearsing for their Annual Charity Concert on Easter Sunday – 1 April 2018 at 7.30pm to be held as usual at the Rhayader Leisure Centre. Doors open at 6.45pm.

The Guest Artist this year is 15 year old Sophie Jones (Metzo Soprano). A Farmers Daughter from Sennybridge, Breconshire. Sophie has been competing in local Eisteddfodau since the age of 3. At the age of 9 was successful in the National Competition ‘Only Kids Allowed’ which resulted in her performing in St Petersburg in Russia and also in South Africa. She also sang at the opening ceremony of the London Olympic Games in 2012. She has also appeared at junior level in many local and national Eisteddfods with success at last year’s Urdd Eiseddfod and has also represented Brecon YFC at national level on several occasions.

This year Sophie is honoured to be the Chairperson for the Youth Committee of the Urdd Movement (the Youth of Wales).

Also accompanying Sophie will be her 17 year old Brother, Morley, who is also an experienced performer having being selected to play leading roles in his School production of Chicago and Oliver. Like his Sister he has competed on local and national Eisteddfodau stages in numerous competitions.

Sophie will also be supported by 2 friends from the Sennybridge area namely another Sophie Jones who has previously appeared with the Choir and Teleri Haf Thomas. The Rhayader Male Voice Choir are very pleased to be bringing these rising stars of the future to Rhayader.

The Choir will this year once again be under the baton of their Conductor, Jonathan Pearce, and their Accompanist as usual will be the talented Bethan Rees.

Compere for the evening is Mrs Heather Jones who brings her own unique brand of talented humour.

Tickets for the Concert are priced at £7.50 and can be paid for at the door on the night.

The proceeds of this year’s Concert will be divided between Prostate Cancer and The Choirs Production of a new CD which will be released very shortly.

So please come along and enjoy a feast of musical splendour and support a worthy cause.


The Rhayader and District Mail Voice Choir recently held their Annual General Meeting which was well attended.
The Chairman, Mr Eirwyn Williams, opened the meeting and welcomed everyone.
In his annual report he thanked everyone concerned for the wonderful support he had received throughout the year, with special mention to the Musical Director, Mr Johnathan Pearce, and Accompanist, Bethan Rees. He also thanked the Officers of the Choir who had served with him on the committee throughout the year and also the Compares and Guest Artistes who had appeared with the Choir.
The Choir, once again, he said had been very active with various concerts, weddings and with other events throughout Mid-Wales and the border counties.
Highlight of the year had been the 4-day tour of Belgium and the choirs performance at the famous Menin Gate in Ypres where the Choir performed an appropriate tribute in the form of a Hymn entitled ‘100 Years from Passchendaele’. Written and composed by Adrian Jones and Bethan Rees, two members of the choir.
Several new members had joined the Choir during the year which as very encouraging and throughout the year the Choir had once again helped to raise many thousands of pounds for local and other charities.
Mr Adrian Jones, on behalf of the Music Committee, gave a very full and detailed report on the music the Choir would be singing this coming year.
2017 had been a very special year for the Choir during which they celebrated their 60th Anniversary since its formation in 1957. This had been celebrated by many events throughout the year concluding with a Grand Gala Dinner and the Metropole Hotel last October.
Mr Miah Lewis was appointed the Choirs new Chairman to succeed Mr Eirwyn Williams who was standing down as Chair after 10 years service to the Choir. The Vice-Chairman appointed was Mr Terry Pritchard.

The Choirs President, Mrs Evelyn Davies, was also standing down after many years in office and was appointed a Life Vice-President.
Mrs Alma Davies of Llanidloes was appointed the new President of the Choir.

The Choir are now looking forward to another busy year with several concerts and weddings already booked and the Choir are always keen to recruit new members to ensure its future success.
The Choir meet every Tuesday evening for rehearsals at 8pm in the Community Centre at Cwmdauddwr, Rhayader.

This weekend the Rhayader and District Male Voice Choir begin a busy run down of events leading up to Christmas with a series of concerts to be held in the area. The Choir who have only recently returned from a successful short tour of Belgium are now looking forward to completing their remaining engagements for 2017.  This weekend on Saturday the 18th November The Choir are in concert at The Village Hall in Kinsham (Herefordshire) in aid of Kinsham Church. The concert commences at 7-pm.

Next weekend on Friday the 24th The Choir once again are in concert at the Town Hall in Talgarth, and is in aid of R A B I ( The Royal Agricultural Benefit Institution) . A very worthy organisation.

On Friday the 15th of December The Choir once again present the annual concert for the residents ,staff and families of The Nursing Care Home Lynhales at Lyonshall. Commencing at 6-30pm.

During the month of December The Choir will also be making their annual visit to The Nursing Care Home Crossfield House in Rhayader in joining other guests and artiste's in presenting once again The Grand annual Gala Concert for The Residents,
Staff and Families and which is always such a great success. The Choir will also be visiting and singing for the residents, staff and families at The nursing care home Wylesfield in Llandrindod Wells.

On Saturday the 23rd of December The Choir will conclude their engagements for the year with A Grand Gala Concert at The Metropole Hotel in Llandrindod Wells. This concert is organised by the Hotel for the entertainment of the many guests from all over country who spend their Christmas in our lovely area of Mid-Wales.

This year 2017 has been a significant year in the Choirs History being the year That they have celebrated their 60th anniversary since its formation in 1957. To mark this occasion The Choir have produced an 18 page glossy brochure depicting the History of the Choir over the last 60 years , together with some interesting photographs of the Choir down through the decades.

This year the Rhayader and District Male Voice Choir are celebrating their 60th Anniversary since the Choir’s formation as a male voice choir back in 1957.

Throughout the year the Choir have been participating in several events leading up to the end of October when the Choir will conclude with a short tour to Ypres in Belgium and a performance at the Menin Gate.

It all started back in April on Easter Sunday when the Choir presented a Grand Gala Concert at the Rhayader Leisure Centre which was attended by a large audience.  

In June the Choir were honoured to perform at the Ladies British International Bowling Tournament held at Llandrindod Wells. 

More recently the Choir arranged and hosted a six choir Gala Concert for all the Male Voice Choirs in Breconshire and Radnorshire held in the Morganwg Hall at the Royal Welsh Show Ground at Llanelwedd and which was attended by a very large audience.

Throughout the year the Choir have continued to complete their domestic concerts throughout Mid-Wales and the Border Counties together with a series of summer concerts at the Glen Usk Hotel in Llandrindod Wells.

On October 7th the Choir will hold a Grand Celebration Banquet at the Metropole Hotel in Llandrindod which will be attended by all Choir Members, Partners and as many Ex-Members who have served the Choir since its formation back in 1957 as can make it. 

The highlight of the year’s celebrations will come at the end of October when the Choir will engage in a short tour of Belgium.

During this tour the Choir will be honoured to sing at the famous Menin Gate in Ypres which will co-inside with the famous Last Post Ceremony which is held every evening of the year.

This year is of special significance as it commemorates 100 years since the end of the 1914 – 1918 Great War.

To honour this special occasion the Choir will perform a particular song appropriate for the event and written and composed by two of its own members. The song is entitled ‘100 Years from Passchendale’. This has been written by its Music Committee Chairman, Mr Adrian Jones, and composed to music by its talented Accompanist, Bethan Rees.

To commemorate this special year in the Choir’s history the Choir have also produced a special 18 page glossy souvenir brochure which includes a number of photographs of the Choir down through the 6 decades and also A Brief History of the Choir researched by former Chairman and present Press Officer, Graham Benbow. Leading up to the end of the year the Choir are involved in several concerts throughout the County and during December will be visiting several of the local Nursing Homes to entertain the residents, concluding on December 23rd with a Grand Gala Concert in the Metropole Hotel in Llandrindod Well in entertaining the many visitors who spend Christmas in Mid-Wales.

It can only be hoped that it will be another 60 years that this famous little male voice choir will continue to entertain audiences throughout Mid-Wales, the Borders and further afield.

On Saturday the 16th of September The Rhayader and District Male Voice Choir are pleased to announce that they will host a grand Gala Concert In The Clwyd/Morgannwg Hall (Old Food Hall) at The Royal Welsh Showground at Llanelwedd.  The event is in aid of The URDD National Eisteddfod which is coming to Llanelwedd next year and which happens to be The largest youth festival throughout Europe.   The concert will include The Six major Male Voice Choirs throughout Brecon and Radnorshire consisting of the following:-

Aberhonddu (Brecon) Male Voice Choir, Builth Wells Male Voice Choir, Cor Dathlu (Cwmtawe) Gyrlais Male Voice Choir (Swansea Valley), Rhayader and District Male Voice Choir and Talgarth Male Voice Choir. The augmented choir will be conducted by their respective conductors in turn. It is understood to be the first time that the choirs of Brecon and Radnorshire have staged as Six choirs together and will consist in excess of 180 voices on stage.

The guest Artistes also appearing on stage will be Helen Jones (Contralto) And Iwan Wyn Parry (Bass). The Compère for the evening will be Deryc Rees The Host Choir on this occasion will be The Rhayader and District Male Voice Choir.

At the recent woman's British International Bowling Festival held at Llandrindod Wells the respective team members of each country together with their officials and supporters were entertained by the Rhayader and District Male Voice Choir to a selection of traditional Welsh Male Voice Singing including a number of songs popular throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland.The selection of music was well Received by everyone present prior to the traditional opening ceremony of the event.

During the opening Ceremony itself the five participating nations including Wales, Scotland, England, Ireland and the Channel Islands were welcomed on to the Rinks by a Rousing Rendition of their Respective National Anthems by The Rhayader Choir and which was enthusiastically Received by the large crowd.

The Choir were later thanked by the respective team officials for the support they had given the event commenting that they had not Received such a welcome at previous International Tournaments as they had here in MId-Wales.



Local school girl Eleri Davies, who played the piano at our Annual Easter concert, has recently competed at the National Eisteddfod in Bridgend, having got to the finals where she came a creditable third. A big congratulations from Rhayader & District Male Choir.


At their last weeks rehersal the members of The Rhayader and District Male Voice Choir stood in silent tribute to honour those who lost their lives and the injured in the aftermath of the recent bomb disaster at the Manchester Arena. It was only a few years ago that the Choir themselves performed at the same Arena in Manchester on the occasion of the festival of 1000 voices. It was therefore felt a poignant and heartfelt act to remember all those who had lost their lives and the injured in this tragic and senseless disaster.

The Vice-Chairman of the Choir, Mr Miah Lewis, this week told our reporter that all our thoughts and prayers were with the city of Manchester and in particular the families of those who died and the injured survivors.


Last weekend on Easter Sunday The Rhayader and District Male Voice Choir presented their annual charity concert to a full house at The Rhayader Leisure Centre. This year was a very special occasion as it is the year the choir celebrate their SIXTIETH anniversary since their formation in 1957.Many people travelled from far and wide to hear this popular choir perform on this very special occasion and we're not disappointed with the evenings entertainment. Throughout the evening the choir entertained the large audience under the baton of their new conductor Johnathon Pearce with a mixed programme of Traditional Male voice numbers together with a selection of popular spiritual songs for the occasion. 

The guest artiste for the evening was the popular soprano and rising star from  Pembrokeshire Jessica Robinson, who has recently been thrilling audiences throughout The World with her cultured soprano voice.   She certainly pleased the Rhayader audience with a combination of operatic and other well known favourite numbers.  An extra treat for the evening was the appearance of brother and sister Eifion and Eleri Davies from Rhayader itself. Aged only Thirteen Eifion has recently won the award for the best individual performer at the Young Farmer's clubs Entertainment competition with his talented performance of Drums medley. Eleri is only aged Eleven and thrilled the audience with her talented performance on the Piano. The accompanist for the whole evenings entertainment was the talented Bethan Rees who takes everything in her stride in accompanying both the choir and the artiste's. Compare for the evening was Heather Jones who never fails to please with her traditional humour and wit. Doormen for the evening were Edgar Price, Emrys Price, John Humphreys and Tudor Ingram. A special raffle was organised in the interval and carried out by the ladies of The Rhayader Cancer Research Team. Chairman of the Choir Mr Eirwyn Williams also announced that this year the total profits of the evening which a mounted to just over One Thousand Pounds (£1000-00) and a further one Hundred pounds (100-00) donated by Mr Miah Lewis (Choir Vice-Chairman) from his recent Eightieth Birthday. Would be donated to the local Prostrate Cancer (Wales).  The presentation was made on behalf of the choir by Mrs Alma Davies(Vice PResident) and was received by Mrs Liz Lewis Rhayader Cancer Research) on behalf of Prostrate Cancer (Wales) The evening concluded with supper being provided by The wives of the Choir Members and helpers.

IMG_3416_1.JPGJonathan moved to Mid Wales and joined the Choir in 2016. His musical background comes from The Salvation Army where he was an active member in the Band and Senior Choir for many years. This included a period of leading a Senior Choir in Bristol. He is currently studying a BA (Hons) Arts and Humanities (Music) degree with the Open University.





Bethan Rees - Accompanist

Bethan ReesBethan, an Associate of the London College of Music, studied the piano at Birmingham Conservatoire and Lancaster University where she gained a B.Mus. She then went to Uppingham School to work as Accompanist in Residence and Senior Piano Teacher before returning to Mid Wales to teach. She is a winner at the National Eisteddfod of Wales in both Piano Playing and Composition. Bethan has been with the Choir since 2005 where she enjoys accompanying them and their guest soloists.



Evelyn Davies - President

Evelyn DaviesEvelyn has been a long standing follower of our choir for many years. She is the widow of a retired farmer and lives at The Hill Farm Presteigne. She has been our president for about ten years and originally her family came from the Rhayader area, a farm called Caeryddwyn Nr Nantmel.

Evelyn has served on many committees throughout Radnorshire over many years and is a former chair-person of Radnorshire District County Council, serving as a County Councillor for many years. She is also a long serving and present member of the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society.
